Is charcoal toothpaste good for you? a dentist's take

In this age of instagram, youtube and influencers,  we keep coming across various trends. A few health trends have been quite popular but they can do more harm than good like- staring in the sun or eating your own placenta. Now you can add charcoal toothpaste to the list. Charcoal as a health trend picked up in 2016 when it was put in everything from pizza buns to black lattes to goth ice-creams. We see videos on media where a tablet of charcoal is put in dirty water and it magically pulls out all impurities from the water and make it crystal white. The charm for charcoal toothpastes lies in its aesthetic and eye-catching appeal on a visual media like instagram and partly as perceived detoxifier. People feel that like charcoal pulls out impurities from water it will pull out stain from teeth and make them whiter. Researchers have however found no evidence about the effectiveness of charcoal toothpaste. Experts opine that this trend is no more than a fashionable, marketing ...

You worry about its health 3. You fuss about the name you are going to give to it. 4. Nothing you do for it seems perfect or enough.. there is always so much more you could do. 5. You keep on looking for ways to help it grow better, nourish it more. 6. It's a hell lot of new responsibilities, which you don't know how to handle.. People keep reassuring you that you are doing a good job and you will learn along the way. 7. In the end IT'S ALL WORTH IT AND YOU LOVE IT A LOT! Joining the 5 am club...is it doable?

I have been thinking a lot about joining the 5 am club... Not just thinking I have been there done that. And I was so productive when I used to wake up at 5 am. I keep getting on-track and off-track. Daily my alarm rings at 5 am and lately I have been pressing the snooze button more often than not. I keep fooling myself that because of yesterday's hectic day I need to reward myself with a little more sleep. After waking up almost an hour later, I realize I have lost so much of my productive time... Because for me 5 to 7.30 am is the most productive hour of the day when there is no one to disturb me, my kid is happily sleeping and the house is quiet. So what is stopping me.. A little laziness :) . Lets get back on track! A shout out to other members of the 5 am club and anyone else who will take the challenge with me. Get up at 5 am for 10 consecutive days and tick something off your To-Do list.

How do I ensure a healthy mouth for my baby? 6 tips to help your kid start brushing. Part 2

This blog post is inspired by a discussion I was having with my very close friend this morning. Like me, she was also encountering difficulties in getting her toddler to brush his teeth. I hope this post will help all the mommies dealing with their wilful toddlers! :) Tip 1: LET THEM PLAY WITH BRUSH- This gets them used to the look and feel of it. And the chewing motion will help in massaging the gums and teeth. Tip 2: USE THE TELL-SHOW-DO TECHNIQUE- First, tell you child how to properly brush. Second show them how it's properly done on a doll or stuffed animal. And third, help the child brush their own teeth with the help from a parent. Tip 3:LET THEM PICK THEIR OWN TOOTHBRUSH If they like it, they are more likely to use it. Kids are fond of attractive looking toothbrush. Tip 4: PLAY GAMES Give them rewards for brushing well. It works! Tip 5: BLAST TUNES Put on your child's favourite song. They should brush the entire length of it. Tip 6: APPS FOR BRUSHING ...

How do I ensure a healthy mouth for my baby? A dentist and mother's perspective. Part 1: Brushing

Taking care of baby's teeth as soon as the first tooth erupts in the mouth is very important to prevent decay occurring in teeth later in life. There is a lot of confusion in parents regarding how to clean the teeth, which brush to use, and which paste to use. Read on to solve all your queries! 1. When to start brushing? Ideally you should start brushing even before the teeth have erupted, when the baby is 3-4 month old. Gently cleaning the gum pads and tongue with gauze wrapped around the finger helps in cleaning mouth. Massaging action with the gauze helps to soothe irritation on gums when teeth erupt. It also makes the baby accustomed to brushing. 2. Which brush to use? After the teeth erupt you can start to use a finger brush as they are soft, gentle and sterilisable and gradually progress to baby tooth brushes once the baby is over an year old. 3. Which tooth paste to use? Initially no toothpaste is required. Wet the brush with water and you are good to go....
