How do I ensure a healthy mouth for my baby? 6 tips to help your kid start brushing. Part 2

This blog post is inspired by a discussion I was having with my very close friend this morning. Like me, she was also encountering difficulties in getting her toddler to brush his teeth. I hope this post will help all the mommies dealing with their wilful toddlers! :)

Tip 1: LET THEM PLAY WITH BRUSH-
This gets them used to the look and feel of it. And the chewing motion will help in massaging the gums and teeth.

Tip 2: USE THE TELL-SHOW-DO TECHNIQUE-
First, tell you child how to properly brush. Second show them how it's properly done on a doll or stuffed animal. And third, help the child brush their own teeth with the help from a parent.

Tip 3:LET THEM PICK THEIR OWN TOOTHBRUSH
If they like it, they are more likely to use it. Kids are fond of attractive looking toothbrush.

Tip 4: PLAY GAMES
Give them rewards for brushing well. It works!

Tip 5: BLAST TUNES
Put on your child's favourite song. They should brush the entire length of it.

Tip 6: APPS FOR BRUSHING
There are various fun apps which teeth the child to brush along with playing. Like Brush DJ, Disney Magic Timer and many more.

Let me know if you try these tips and which one works for your little munchkin. :)

How do I ensure a healthy mouth for my baby? A dentist and mother's perspective. Part 1: Brushing

Taking care of baby's teeth as soon as the first tooth erupts in the mouth is very important to prevent decay occurring in teeth later in life. There is a lot of confusion in parents regarding how to clean the teeth, which brush to use, and which paste to use. Read on to solve all your queries! 1. When to start brushing? Ideally you should start brushing even before the teeth have erupted, when the baby is 3-4 month old. Gently cleaning the gum pads and tongue with gauze wrapped around the finger helps in cleaning mouth. Massaging action with the gauze helps to soothe irritation on gums when teeth erupt. It also makes the baby accustomed to brushing. 2. Which brush to use? After the teeth erupt you can start to use a finger brush as they are soft, gentle and sterilisable and gradually progress to baby tooth brushes once the baby is over an year old. 3. Which tooth paste to use? Initially no toothpaste is required. Wet the brush with water and you are good to go.
